Two Half Century Chinese Jade Water Buffalo Found In Old Box

Breaking news was report from telegraph site on today April 25, 2009 at noon 12.01 PM. On their report they said the Chinese Jade Buffalo which already missing since the owner dead on 1948 and it was found by his daughter, Lady Diana Miller in a bank vault.

According to the history of this Chinese Jade Buffalo, the 8.1in ornament, from the Qing Dynasty’s Qianlong Period (1736-1795), was bought by British peer and soldier Sackville Pelham, 5th Earl of Yarborough, in 1938. At that time he only paid £300 for it, the equivalent of £52,000 today – but it is now expected to fetch £500,000 at auction.

At the start of the Second World War, the Earl was posted to Palestine but on his return in 1940 his ship came under heavy fire and was sunk. He survived but developed respiratory difficulties from the smoke, which lead to his death in 1948.

His prize buffalo, which is perched on a gilt bronze stand, became the property of his eldest daughter, Lady Diana Miller, who in the same year emigrated to South Africa.

The whereabouts of the buffalo were unknown until 2005 when Lady Diana returned and the large wooden chest, thought to contain porcelain, was opened in a bank vault.

It is now being put up for auction where it is expected to fetch £500,000.

John Axford, of Salisbury Auctioneers Woolley and Wallis, handling the said: “Inside, among various other items, was an old wooden box sealed with rusty nails, string and sealing wax. The box was opened for the first time in 65 years and inside, carefully wrapped in newspapers dated 1940, was the magnificent jade buffalo. ”

He said “the fabulous beast” belonged to a small group of jade carvings, mainly of water buffaloes and horses, described at the Oriental Ceramic Society exhibition in 1974 as “among the most ambitious and monumental examples of jade ever worked in China.”

Lady Diana, who now lives in the North of England, is selling the buffalo through Woolley and Wallis on May 21 when it is expected to fetch “in the region of half a million pounds”.
